Kenyan Safari (with hiking) Just had a nice itinerary in Kenya, and thought I’d share it.  The focus of this itinerary is “if you enjoy hiking, and are afraid safaris being 6-10 hours of car time for a week straight”.  Safaris are amazing, and also similar to a cruise… lots of delicious buffets, lots of lounging time, if you’re not careful, you’ll put on some pounds. Day 1: Late arrival in Nairobi D2-3: tour company drove me to ol pajeta.  I highly recommend Ol Pajeta and the rhino sanctuary to see the last two northern white rhinos.  I also strongly recommend the Maisha Sweetwaters camp for your stay. D4: broke up the safari with a day hike of Mount Kenya.  Most of the information you’ll find on Mount Kenya calls for a 3 or 5 day hike.  If you want to make it to the highest hike-able peak, or if you want to climb to the tallest peak, you will need at least one overnight camp, but if you’re used to higher elevations (ie hike the Rockies, alps, Andes) you’ll be fine to make it up a lot of the mountain with a day trip.  I made it to the second day camp site (25km and 1200m very change, peak 4200m), which was a lot, but worth it.  I stayed in ol pajeta that night.  If you are a strong hiker, and start early in the morning, and get a strong guide, you might be able to hike to the top in one day, but I’ve never hiked above 4,500m, so I don’t know how much it slows you down. D5: flew to Masai Mara and did a game drive.  The tour company offered to drive me from ol pajeta to lake naivasha and then to Masai Mara. This would save money.  But I thought the bush plane experience was fun, and it cuts 5-10 hours of total car time out. D6-7: game drives.  Used the pool as my exercise. D8-9: went to lake naivasha area to break up the drive from Masai Mara to Nairobi.  Biked and hiked around hells gate and Mt Longonot.  Highly recommend Mt Longonot as a hike. D10: boat safari and walking safari at lake naivasha.  Stop at Nairobi national museum to kill time before getting on the plane. Overall: Really cool trip, got to see the Big 5 along with other animals.  Got to see a lot of predators going after prey.  Trip was last week of May, which was perfect weather.  Food was delicious everywhere.  I made it a solo trip.  It costs some money, but it’s a cool bucket list type trip.  Highly recommend. One adjustment to consider if you want more hiking (not sure if this is a common consideration haha):  I wish I could’ve fit in aberdare national park for some good hiking.  Maybe one less day of safari, and instead of flying to Masai Mara, drive to Abedare as the half way point.  It would be a lot of driving, but could be cool. For tour company, I used daylight adventures.  They did a great job working with me (I booked everything two weeks before the trip, so very short notice).  Michael and Ken were my safari guides, both amazing.  Joseph and Joshua were my hiking guides at Mt Kenya and Mt Longonot respectively, both were great. After lots of research I decided to book my husband and I's first African safari with Daylight and I can see why they are highly recommended! Huge thanks to Veroline for being patient with us during the booking/payment process and for organizing such an amazing safari. Another huge thanks to our guide, Justus, for working hard to ensure we see the Big 5 (which we did!) plus Cheetahs. He knew where to look for the wildlife and pointed out animals we would have missed! On top of that, he got us close enough for me to take beautiful photos with just my phone. The drives between parks were long and tiring but we were able to joke around together with our guide to help make some time pass. The roads and traffic were so different compared to home (Canada) but Justus never made us feel uncomfortable or unsafe in his vehicle. I wanted to purchase a sweater with Daylight's logo before heading home and Elvis made sure we each got a sweater before we left. I am not sure what happened on their end but shout out to Elvis for driving all the way down to the airport and meeting my husband outside so we could get our sweaters! They are super soft and comfortable and I hope people ask me about it when I wear it so I can tell them about Daylight and our trip. Everyone who was involved in organizing our trip in Kenya were extremely kind, caring, friendly and went above and beyond. Do not hesitate to book with Daylight!

Daylight Adventures was recommended to us by a friend of mine, and I will most definitely do the same! If I could give more than 5 stars I would :) Elvis and Misaro from Daylight Adventures were incredibly helpful, made an itinerary just for us with fast and impeccable communication and they have broad knowledge of travel options and possibilities in Kenya and beyond. Our driver was amazing, became a friend, and was very good at spotting wildlife and at communicating with other drivers in order to spot many different animals. Daylight Adventures is trustworthy and reliable. My mother and I travelled to Kenya for the first time, and for my mother this was quite stressful as she never travelled in this region before, but Daylight Adventures had organised and communicated everything so well that the stress soon melted away, and she was able to fully enjoy a wonderful holiday. We just returned from an unforgettable 11-night safari with Daylight Adventures across Nairobi National Park, Amboseli National Park, and the Maasai Mara, traveling with our 7-year-old daughter. The entire experience exceeded expectations. From the very beginning, Misaro handled everything flawlessly. The planning was detailed, thoughtful, and clearly tailored to our family. She answered every question thoroughly, anticipated needs before we realized we had them, and coordinated a multi-destination itinerary that felt seamless from start to finish. Every transfer, lodge, bush flight, and park entry was executed without a single issue. The level of organization behind the scenes was evident throughout the entire trip. Our guide, Martin, was exceptional in the field. He was knowledgeable, patient, and intuitive, especially while traveling with a child. He positioned us perfectly for wildlife viewing and photography, kept long drives engaging, and ensured we made the most of our time in each reserve. Because of his expertise, we were able to see and photograph the Big Five across three distinct ecosystems. Amboseli’s elephant herds with Kilimanjaro in the background, the wildlife density of the Maasai Mara, and the surreal experience of Nairobi National Park with the city skyline behind it each offered something unique. The pacing was active but never overwhelming, which made the experience ideal for a family. Traveling to Africa with a young child can feel daunting, but Misaro and the Daylight Adventures team removed all stress. The trip felt both adventurous and secure at the same time. If you are considering a safari and want meticulous planning combined with expert guiding on the ground, we would recommend Daylight Adventures without hesitation. We had an absolutely incredible safari, and a huge thank you to our guide Michael who was outstanding from start to finish. He fulfilled all our wishes, made sure we saw everything we hoped for (and more!), and always positioned us perfectly for the best views and photos. His knowledge, patience, and positive energy truly made the experience unforgettable. A special mention also goes to Elvis, one of the owners of the agency, who was equally amazing. He was professional, kind, and available 24/7 for anything we needed. The whole organization was seamless and stress-free. We booked a safari trip to Kenya through this agency, including three different lodges, a train journey, and several game drives in between. Overall, the planning and organization of the trip were good, especially in the preparation phase. Our main contact at the agency was always very responsive, accurate, and professional. Communication before the trip was smooth, questions were answered quickly, and all arrangements were clearly explained. In terms of pricing, everything was reasonable and matched what was agreed upon. From an organizational and planning perspective, we were generally satisfied. However, there were significant issues during the trip itself, which is why we can only give three out of five stars. After the first lodge, we were picked up by a driver who stayed with us for several days for game drives. Unfortunately, this driver was very unmotivated, showed little interest in explaining wildlife or engaging with us, and communication was minimal. The game drives felt uninspired and lacked the enthusiasm and knowledge we expected on a safari. The most serious issue occurred on the final transfer from the last lodge to Nairobi, a drive of approximately four to five hours. The driver’s behavior was completely unacceptable: he appeared to fall asleep while driving, made dangerous overtaking maneuvers, and at one point left us sitting in the car for about 20 minutes in the blazing sun without air conditioning. This situation felt unsafe and highly unprofessional. While the trip was well planned on paper and the agency’s communication beforehand was excellent, the quality and safety of the drivers provided are critical, and in our case, this clearly did not meet expectations. We hope the agency takes this feedback seriously and improves driver selection and quality control in the future.
